A number of scenes in Shakespeare's plays in which one character “interviews” another are analyzed to reveal familiar discourse features including deception, indirection, ambiguity, and asymmetry of status. Riddles are briefly discussed and the problems of working through an interpreter displayed. The lifechanging potential of certain interview is also remarked upon.
