Ethnic minority students in the Netherlands have substantial educational disadvantages compared with Dutch students. Equally striking are the differences in school performance among the various ethnic minority groups. In this article, the educational position of ethnic minority students in the Netherlands is explored from a cultural‐ecological perspective. The article concludes that cultural as well as educational differences between schools and parents have an impact on the school performance of ethnic minority students and that Ogbu's typology needs to be reconsidered.
