This article describes a classroom activity used by a secondary school teacher in the People's Republic of China to encourage students to talk and actively participate in class. The activity is analyzed in terms of the way in which it responds to three orientations of Chinese culture: the inclination to compete, the enthusiasm for debate, and the tendency to use representatives to speak on behalf of the group.
