This article examines counterhegemonic elements of curriculum and teacher practice in two Guatemalan bilingual (Kaqchikel Maya‐Spanish) public elementary schools. The analysis focuses on the manner in which teachers and students construct knowledge about Guatemala's major ethnic groups that challenges dominant views of Maya history and culture, as well as Maya‐ladino ethnic relations. Data were derived from classroom observations, teacher interviews, and content analyses of instructional materials.
