I describe a number of student‐focused laboratory exercises that are inexpensive, yet show the scientific character of archaeology. In one set of exercises, students learn how professional archaeologists reconstruct paleoenvironments by: identifying and quantifying pollen, analyzing earth cores, identifying prey species in owl pellets, and doing simple microwear analyses.
