This article uses results of an ethnographic study in two Quechua‐speaking communities of Puno, Peru, to explore a specific instance of the phenomenon of schooltime spent in other than academic endeavors. It documents the uses to which schooltime is put in these communities and then seeks to account for the observed uses of time in terms of ethnographically derived insights as to social, cultural, economic, and political factors impinging on education in this setting.
