This paper is an analysis of the relationship of indigenous and western systems of education in lower Zaire during the period of the transformation of the lineage mode of production prevailing in precolonial times to a form of dependent capitalism. The paper also explores the relationship of these two educational systems to the religion, social structure, and patterns of social stratification of populations of lower Zaire placing special emphasis on the Bakongo.
