Problems of effectiveness of programs of bilingual education point to the need for understanding factors outside the educational system that can determine the impact of such programs. This study presents data from two Guatemalan Indian communities that show the effect of different types of marketing on the incidence and degree of bilingualism among women. Four factors are isolated that influence the amount and kind of interaction that takes place between Indian women and non‐Indians. The influence of these patterns of interaction on bilingualism is examined. BILINGUALISM, MARKETING, CULTURE CHANGE, CAKCHIQUEL.
