Major findings from the psychological and educational literature pertinent to the study of sex‐role culture in schools are identified and discussed. Four commonly used sociocultural theories are presented: functionalism, cultural ecology, ethnoscience, and symbolic interactionism. Applications of each to research on sex‐role culture in schools are demonstrated, integrating generalizations from the psychological and educational literature. The use of explicit theoretical paradigms and interdisciplinary approaches should facilitate the development of more rigorous explanations in this area.
