This study of Los Pastores, a folk drama performed in San Antonio, Texas, argues that the struggle over the production and reproduction of culture is situated in the emergent social formation evoked through performance. As such, the interrelationship between gifting and labor constitutes a communicative dialectic upon which an analysis of expressive culture, one based on performance as production, is centered.
