Anthropological studies of gossip have been preoccupied with its content; as important as the question of what gossip is about may be, such a focus has prevented a close examination of gossip itself as both text and activity. This paper is concerned with talanoa, a gossip genre among Hindi‐speaking Fiji Indians. It demonstrates the close relationships among gossip topic, performance style, and social process in a rural community.
