Cheyenne personal names reflect the structure of formal cosmology, both in the kinds of names selected and their frequency of appearance. A quantitative and statistical analysis of the 1880 U.S. Census shows a congruence between ethnobiology and the sex and ages of name‐bearers and confirms ethnographic assertions about naming and name changing from 1810 to the present .
