In contrast to the kinds of political activity on other Plains reservations, Arapahoe politics are characterized by consensus, not factionalism, and the elected business council enjoys virtually unanimous support. This paper identifies and accounts for political symbols as cultural directives motivating and validating a social structure that is corporate and an ideology that builds political consensus. It is suggested that variant processes in Indian politics are obscured without the study of symbolic process.
