A set of Mexican folk illness terms is examined using cluster analysis. The distinctions that best explain the resulting illness categories are found to be also among the most important considerations involved in the formulation of strategies for preventing and alleviating illness. The “hot‐cold” distinction is found to be less important than has been assumed in accounting for the classification.
