I describe the economic inputs and outputs in this Northern Thai hill village in terms of three spheres: subsistence, consumption, and reciprocity. I examine in detail the place of markets for opium, tabor, and consumer goods, and the relations among the three spheres. I develop a set of path models to test certain assertions against statistical data from the village and conclude that the political and social form of the village is in part a consequence of the availability of labor for hire, the market for opium, and the availability of lowland goods. I further conclude that interactions with these markets are shaped by internal ideological and political aspects of the village .
