Sociolinguistic studies have established that social relations are clearly expressed in language use. This paper examines social relations and their expression in kin term address usage in a Turkish village and suggests a refinement of this sociolinguistic finding. Quantitative analyses of respect rank and address usage among married male villagers suggest a general principle of language use: that unmarked social relations are expressed consistently in language use, but that marked relations are constrained and only weakly evident in usage .
