The purpose of this paper is to describe the relationship between variability in the structure of the Luganda color lexicon and other sociocultural variables. The distribution of color in the physical and sociocultural environment in Buganda is described first in order to provide a context for the description of the color lexicon. Several psycholinguistic techniques are used to determine the range and extent of cognitive variability with respect to the color lexicon, and this variability is systematically related to other sociocultural variables.
