Political alliances formed by marital exchange and the intensity of warfare are examined with data from the New Guinea Highlands. It is found in this study that extravillage alliance bonds are tenuous and impermant because of symbolic, demographic, and political factors which make the defense of intravillage security a more valued alternative. These factors have comparative Implications for the study of intergroup conflict management.
