This essay examines the debate concerning the treatment of animals in the charreada, or Mexican rodeo. Focusing on the language used in reporting the event, the author demonstrates how this debate has become racialized in the English‐language media because of the tendency to identify the issue of animal abuse in rodeos as an exclusively Mexican practice.
