In the last holiday season before free elections in South Africa, a massacre takes place in a Cape Town pub frequented by blacks and whites. Visiting the morgue while survivors arrive to identify the dead, and later participating in a therapeutic postmassacre trauma group, the author ponders the limits of ethnographic field inquiry.
