How Lewis H. Morgan came to do what he did has been much commented on, not always accurately. Manuscripts preserved in the papers Morgan bequeathed to the University of Rochester correct these errors, provide insights into how Morgan went about doing research, and suggest the relevance of his work to issues still being discussed.
