We use Chayanov's central concept of the on‐farm balance to develop descriptions of household production that provide evidence for the way households fit into the material realities of their economic, social, and political systems. This provides a theoretically, ethnographically, and historically motivated way to compare households and political‐economic systems and their cultural correlates.
