One of the unsatisfactory characteristics of much recent work in socio‐linguistics has been the indiscriminate use of the labels “Standard” and “Nonstandard,” particularly in dealing with varieties of language such as Black English. The greatest danger in the situation has been the tendency to identify Standard English with an upper class accent instead of treating the two notions as separate, though related, phenomena. The definition of the term “Standard Language” is examined with reference to the status of Schwyzertütsch, Scottish English, and Black English.
