This paper explores the ambivalent quality of interpersonal relations in a small Castilian community. For purposes of economic and psychological security, villagers establish a wide network of social ties outside the nuclear family. Yet they distrust and resent those with whom they must affiliate. In order to maintain successful social and economic ties, then, they resort to a series of standardized devices which operate as a lubricant to social relations.
