Social scientists often construct informal models of the behavior of typical members of a society or of members of a social category, such as “peasants.” A technique of formalizing such models in terms of mathematical decision theory is illustrated with informal models offered by Hallowell and Freud. Quantitative implications of the models are compared with field data from two groups of Ojibwa.
