The choice facing anthropologists wishing to use the concept of corporateness has been to use either a model unique to the law of property in Western societies or a looser definition which does not justify replacement of traditional terms. This paper suggests that alternative models may be more appropriate where it is necessary to depict arrangements involving group tenure .
