Analyses of kinship terminology and of descent and residential rules have dominated the study of the Japanese family and kinship organization. However, the positional terminological system is found to be sociocentric in nature. It is argued that succession and inheritance rules provide a more useful approach to the structural study of the sociocentric stem family in Japan .
