Using a New Guinea music system for illustration, three methods of melodic description are utilized: (1) the flow diagram, (2) formulas, and (3) a geometric model. The three methods are proposed as useful tools in the areas of melodic description, comparison of musical styles or systems and composing in a given ethnic style or system.
