Marriages between persons of specified kin relationships are favored more in some societies than in others. Sometimes where a great preference is apparent, there is nevertheless a discrepancy between verbal expression and actual practice. An examination of Magpie Miao genealogies is made in order to discover the extent to which the supposedly highly favored ( prescriptive ) patrilateral cross‐cousin marriage is practiced, and to evaluate the extent against certain situational restraints.
