Sapir's writings on the relation of personality and culture are discussed with regard to their distinctive and challenging approach to ethnology. The lack of professional controversy over Sapir is explored. A distinction is formulated between imposed structure and inherent cultural structure; following from this distinction, Sapir's personalized approach is examined for its implications for ethnographic method.
