En este artículo se revisa la historia de la semántica histórica y se pone en contexto esta disciplina. El objetivo del artículo es exponer sucintamente cómo se ha ido configurando la semántica histórica desde su aparición en el siglo XIX hasta el momento presente y qué hipótesis básicas ha formulado. Asimismo, el artículo presenta un resumen de los diferentes artículos que componen este monográfico, explica su originalidad y muestra cuál es su aportación, tanto teórica como descriptiva, al estudio de la evolución semántica.The present paper reviews the evolution of historical semantics, in addition to contextualizing this discipline. The paper has as its aim to describe briefly how historical semantics has gradually taken shape since its appearance in the 19th century and until the present day, equally specifying the hypotheses that it has posed. The paper likewise provides a summary of the different papers included in this monograph, explains their originality, and shows the extent to which they have contributed to the study of semantic evolution, both from a theoretical point of view and in descriptive terms.Este trabajo se enmarca en los proyectos de investigación emergente Semántica cognitiva diacrónica: aplicación de las últimas tendencias a la lengua española (GV/2015/113) y Semántica cognitiva histórica: aplicación de las últimas tendencias al español (GRE14-08)
