There is a long history of widespread use of fluoride in a variety of treatment modalities for caries prevention – in particular of fluoride toothpaste, the most significant and ubiquitous form of caries control used globally. The effects of topical fluoride therapy are comprehensively assessed and summarised in a number of Cochrane reviews compiling the evidence on this topic. Cochrane reviews have answered important questions regarding the effects of fluoride on caries, and have become influential as a foundation for preventive practice in dentistry.
