What is a role model, how do you decide who they should be? If you are considered a role model, how do you talk to others about the choices you have made? With the decline in numbers of trainees opting for surgery as a career and an increasing numbers of female medical students in the UK, this article explores some of the issues around choosing role models and how we might present a career in surgery to students and trainees at all levels.Redefining emulation.
