Elective surgery accounts for a significant proportion of hospital income and resource utilisation. With the National Health Service needing to make savings of £20 billion by 2014, the operating theatre is a key area for targeted reform. At an average running cost of £15 per minute, time wasted in theatre represents a major financial escalator, and occurs nationwide in most lists, in most theatres, in most trusts and on most days of the year.
