Acute appendicitis is the most common indication for emergency abdominal surgery in children and adolescents. The incidence increases with increasing age with an annual rate of 1–6 per 10,000 children from birth to 4 years of age to 19–28 per 10,000 children up to 14 years. 1 boys are more commonly affected than girls with a lifetime risk of 9% and 7% respectively. in england, almost 7,000 appendicectomies are performed on children aged 14 years and under annually. 2
