The article reveals the theoretical and practical aspects of mastering the words of the Ukrainian language by future primary school teachers. The study of accentuation norms is considered as an important component of the language and speech training of students. A review of significant works on Ukrainian accentology has been carried out, disclosed linguistic and methodological approaches to the definition of the concepts of «culture of speech», «norms of the literary language», «orthoepic norms», «accentuation norms», etc. A language norm is defined as a set of language means that in a given language usage at a certain historical stage are considered correct and exemplary. It is noted that accentological norms regulate the stress of words in the modern Ukrainian literary language. The peculiarities of the Ukrainian accent are highlighted: first, it is free, it is not fixed in some permanent place for all words; secondly, it is mobile, that is, it often changes its place in different forms of the same word. The article describes the patterns of Ukrainian accentuation and the main provisions of the methodology for their study by applicants for education. Exercises and tasks for increasing the level of accentuation literacy of students are presented, aimed at working out word-discriminating stress, normative accentuation of stressed types of various parts of speech, form-discriminating, double, interferential stress, stress of borrowed words, difficult cases of accentuation. In the future, it is planned to develop a methodology for future primary school teachers to study accentuation norms with a communicative approach, the inclusion of tokens illustrating different cases of emphasis in phrases, sentences, texts.
