The article reveals the concept of educational and cognitive competence as a component of self-development of students of pedagogical institutions of higher education. Emphasis is placed on the widespread introduction into pedagogical practice of a competency-based approach to determining the goals of the educational process and its results, the formation of educational and cognitive competence of future teachers as an integral part of self-development. The strategy of training specialists capable of continuous personal, professional and social growth, the essence of which is the free development of personality and ability to self-development, creative work, and competitiveness in the labor market is revealed.
