The article considers the specifics of the concepts “competence” and “competency” which are the defining categories of the competence approach. The relationship between the concepts of “competence” and “competence” is characterized and different approaches are used to determine their essence. It is determined that the formation of professional competence is the key to qualitative development of society, personal professional success and effective work in many spheres of life. In fact, the issue of application of the competence approach as the basis of the new educational paradigm becomes especially relevant in the modern conditions of modernization of the system of education and upbringing and European integration processes of education in Ukraine. It is noted that modern Ukraine is on its path of updating the education system, which is focused on entering world educational and information space, which is accompanied by significant qualitative changes in the theory and practice of the educational process. Moreover, ensuring the quality of higher education is an important condition for the innovative development of the state and society. Competence-oriented approach to the formation of the content of education has become a new conceptual key point in Ukraine.
