Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is the most commonly seen tumor in the head and neck region, especially in south China. Diagnosis of this cancer is still difficult particularly in the following atypical conditions1 Patients presenting with neck lymphadenopathy only, while the primary lesion is hidden beneath the apparently normal mucosa of the nasopharynx. 2 Patients having positive serum Epstein‐Barr virus antibody titer but without any apparent lesion in the nasopharynx. We have tried to improve the instrument used to obtain the cytology specimen by using a gauze ball; the guiding of the biting biopsy by spraying hydrogen peroxide; and the biopsy of submucosal lesions by using the multiple‐hole needle. The technique and the preliminary results are presented.
