This year marks the 50th year of the existence of the American Board of Otolaryngology. It was the second certifying Board in American medicine, founded and incorporated in 1924 by 10 representatives from 5 of our largest specialty societies. The objectives of the Board were delineated. These were, and still are, to establish standards of qualification for otolaryngologists who desire and request Board certification; to determine which candidates fulfill these standards of qualification; to examine such candidates and issue certificates upon satisfactory completion of the requirements, and finally to encourage development and maintenance of the highest standards in the teaching and training of otolaryngologists.
