Mediastinoscopy is the primary technique for the diagnosis of disorders limited to the mediastinum which are of lymphatic origin. The procedure is safe and yields sufficient tissue for tissue analysis. Information secured from tomography of the mediastinum is discussed, and the immediate advantages of frozen tissue study assist the surgeon in procuring appropriate material. A review of the lymphomas and sarcoidosis as they appear in the mediastinum is presented. Contraindications to surgery are listed, and its role in the overall appraisal of the endoscopist cited.
