Different kinds of experiments in vitro and in animals and out of a large number of biopsies taken from patients with free skin graft after shorter or longer, even some years of interval proved Water and electrolytes metabolism in free skin grafts isthe prime condition for its undisturbed taking. This beginning was demonstrated already 15 minutes after transplantation, full scale is' reached before one hours time. Early disturbances during this time and during the restart of further functions of the metabolism in the first 24 and 48 hours period which are not severe enough for the loss of the graft are the cause for late disturbances lasting many years of more or less severe kind. They may be of atrophic or hypertrophic nature. Their histologic nature is demonstrated.
