Thirty‐two patients with fractures of the body and/or angle of the mandible were divided randomly into an experimental group (17 patients) and control group (15 patients). Open and closed reductions were performed as indicated. Mastication was initiated in the control group at six to eight weeks and in the experimental group two to three weeks after surgery. Postoperatively the patients were followed four to 18 months. There was no objective difference noted in the end results of the two groups studied.
