Facial nerve injuries are important to recognize in terms of etiology and degree of loss of facial function. The first examiner after the injury has an important function to serve because his observations may be crucial to definitive management. The mode of injury gives insight into management. A knowledge of the physiology of nerve repair is helpful in determining the optimum time of neurorrhaphy. There are nuances in operative technique which are helpful in gaining maximum return of facial nerve function when repair is necessary.
