It is a very common condition, most frequent in children aged 5-10 years and young adults between 15 and 25 years. A GP with a list of 2,000 can expect to see around 120 cases of sore throat a year with considerable seasonal variation see the separate article on Sore Throat. [1] The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) suggests that only 1 patient in 18 with a sore throat will consult. [2]
