Preventing illegal immigration in the European Union since the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty. The legislation in force after the Treaty of Lisbon The article analyses the activities of the European Union aimed at preventing illegal immigration. The author describes the legal basis for immigration policy prior to and after the Treaty of Lisbon came into force. The most important elements of the multiannual programs for justice and home affairs adopted by the European Council between 1999 and 2009 are also discussed. Chronologically, these were: The Tampere, The Hague and The Stockholm Programs. Finally, the article presents statistical data related to the number of illegal third country citizens in the EU Member States.
