Can Italian Translation Render the French Distinction Between Historical Tenses and Discourse Tenses? (An Analysis of a Translation of Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint‑Exupéry)This article addresses the use of two French Past tenses in a narrative text: passé simple and passé composé. These tenses are used in two different types of utterances, respectively: « history » and « discourse » (Benveniste). De Saint‑Exupéry made use of this distinction in order to build two parallel narrations: the history of the Little Prince and that of the narrator‑pilot. The author discusses the (im)possibility of marking these two narrations in an Italian translation.
