Artificum scaenicorum studium amoremque inhonestum probrosumque esse. The Actor and their Audience in the Roman Theatre The paper analyses the role and position of actors in ancient Rome, from the times of the Republic to the principate. Main emphasis is put on the legal understanding of problems such as the special order of seating in Roman theatres and the privileges of senators and ordo equester, social position of actors and the question of the citizens’ participation (willing or not) in the performances.
