Interpretive activities of the Senate and its impact on the interpretation and application of law in prerevolutionary Russia

The article researches the role of the Senate in the uniform interpretation and application of law throughout the territory of the Russian Empire. As a rule, the acts of the Senate, concerning private matters, should not have been made by the courts to resolve similar cases.However, in some cases, mainly when the gaps in the law, the Senate ordered the courts to follow their private decrees and definitions.This position has allowed develop a uniform practice in the resolution of court cases.The expansion of the interpretive powers of the courts after the reform of 1864 had led to depreciation of the interpretation functions of the Senate.It remained the most important authority in determining and controlling the uniform interpretation and enforcement practice of the Russian Empire.
