The bibliographic citation of Crinum balfourii is revised. The species authority has traditionally been attributed to J.G. Baker who described the species in honour of its discoverer, I.B. Balfour, from a flowering specimen cultivated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England. However, the species name and a brief diagnostic description were published earlier in the horticultural periodical, The Gardeners' Chronicle , edited by M.T. Masters. Determination of Masters's original type material is open to interpretation and the various possibilities are discussed. In light of current evidence, we herein designate a neotype for the species, rendering Baker's name an isonym.
